Amber Isle is a social simulation game from developer Ambertail Games and publisher Team17. It launched for Windows on 10 October 2024, and arrived on Nintendo Switch on 13 February 2025. The game marks the first project from the Northern Ireland-based independent studio, and it earned five awards at the 2025 Imirt Irish Game Awards.
In Amber Isle, players run a shop in a quaint island town populated by anthropomorphic dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals called "Paleofolk." These creatures come from various geologic eras, including Ice Age mammals, Permian amphibians, marine life, and invertebrates. Players create their own Paleofolk character by mixing parts from different species. They interact with 48 distinct villagers, each with unique personalities and traits, while serving as the island's only shopkeeper. Players craft items, set prices, and decide what to sell to restore the town. Shops can be upgraded, and the island can be customized with paths, recreational areas, and water features. Repairing or unlocking areas allows expansion and attracts new permanent residents.
Ambertail Games first announced Amber Isle on 26 December 2020, as the studio's debut title, developed for Windows and Nintendo Switch. It drew inspiration from simulation games like Animal Crossing and Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale. The developers aimed to improve on Animal Crossing's dialogue redundancy by giving each villager distinct personalities, interests, and jobs they discuss throughout the day. Prehistoric species were chosen because the developers felt they were underrepresented in mainstream media. Originally, players were to play as a human, but the ability to create a Paleofolk was added after becoming the most-requested feature. A trailer appeared during the Wholesome Direct showcase at E3 2021. In April 2024, Team17 announced they would publish the game. Development was supported by Northern Ireland Screen.
Amber Isle received an average critic score of 72 out of 100 on Metacritic, described as "mixed or average reviews." Shacknews's Loren Chandler noted that while the game has a wholesome experience, it suffers from camera and UI bugs, as well as progression issues. The game won five awards at the 2025 Imirt Irish Game Awards: Best Game Design, Best Game Art, Best Game Audio, Best Debut Game, and Game of the Year.

The Island and Its Inhabitants
Amber Isle casts the player as the lone shopkeeper of a small, charming island community populated entirely by "Paleofolk" — anthropomorphic creatures drawn from across deep geological history. Rather than limiting the cast to a single era, the town includes Ice Age mammals, Permian-era amphibians, marine species, and invertebrates, creating a richly varied neighborhood. Players do not simply walk through this world as an observer; they inhabit it as a custom Paleofolk assembled from body parts belonging to different species, allowing for a truly unique character. The core loop revolves around managing a single general store: crafting goods, setting prices, and deciding which items hit the shelves, all in service of restoring the town to its former vibrancy. Beyond commerce, the game asks players to nurture relationships with forty-eight individual villagers, each carrying their own personality, preferences, and daily concerns. As the island grows, players can repair broken-down districts, unlock new zones, and reshape the landscape with paths, gardens, and water features, gradually expanding both the town's footprint and its permanent population.
From Northern Ireland to the World
Ambertail Games, a small independent studio based in Northern Ireland, announced Amber Isle on 26 December 2020 as its very first project, with co-founder Jordan Bradley taking the public stage. The team openly cited the Animal Crossing franchise and Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale as creative touchstones, yet they set out to address what they saw as repetitive, redundant dialogue in the former by ensuring every villager spoke about their own specific interests, job, and personality throughout the day. The decision to populate the island with prehistoric and dinosaur species stemmed from a belief that such creatures were underrepresented in mainstream gaming and media. Interestingly, the developers initially planned for a human protagonist, but community demand for a customizable Paleofolk character proved so strong that the feature was added and became central to the identity of the game. A trailer debuted at the Wholesome Direct showcase during E3 in June 2021. Development received support from Northern Ireland Screen, and in April 2024, Team17 stepped in as publisher, ultimately delivering the title to Windows in October 2024 and to Nintendo Switch in February 2025.
Critical Response and Player Experience
Amber Isle landed on Metacritic with an aggregate score of 72 out of 100, placing it in the "mixed or average" bracket — a fair summary given the split between its charming design and a handful of technical rough edges. Loren Chandler of Shacknews captured that duality well, praising the team's clear effort to craft a wholesome, cozy experience while acknowledging persistent issues with the camera system, user interface, and progression pacing. Even so, Chandler's closing sentiment was one of genuine affection: despite the bugs, the reviewer already knew they would be returning to the shop to craft items and sell them to dinosaur customers. The overall critical picture suggests a game that is warm, well-intentioned, and visually appealing, but still carrying the kind of polish gaps that often accompany a debut title from a small studio. The reception underscores both the promise of Ambertail's vision and the practical challenges of shipping a full simulation experience on a limited team.
A Debut That Resonated at Home
Perhaps the most striking testament to Amber Isle's impact came not from international outlets but from its own island. At the 2025 Imirt Irish Game Awards, the title swept five categories, taking home Best Game Design, Best Game Art, Best Game Audio, Best Debut Game, and the top prize of Game of the Year. For a first project from a small Northern Ireland studio, that kind of recognition is extraordinary and speaks to how deeply the game resonated with the Irish gaming community. The breadth of the wins — spanning design, visual art, sound, and overall achievement — suggests that voters saw a cohesive, well-crafted package rather than a single standout element. The fact that Ambertail secured Team17 as its publisher and received backing from Northern Ireland Screen also highlights the broader ecosystem of support that helped a debut indie title reach both PC and console audiences. Amber Isle's award haul positions it as a landmark moment for Irish game development and a strong foundation for a studio now ready to build upon its proven track record.
